V6 - Google Classroom - How to Create/Manage Classes and Add Students

Provides details on adding classrooms and students to Typing Agent Version 6. If you are an administrator with access to your school's Google Classroom data, you may add everything all at once.

Written by Gia Deleveaux

Google Classroom sync lets you create Typing Agent classes from courses you already manage in Google Classroom. When a course is imported, Typing Agent creates the class and brings in its enrolled students, reducing the need to enter roster information manually. Teachers and school administrators can use this option when Google Classroom rostering has been allowed for their school.

School Administrators, go to Management, the People & Rosters, then use the Google Classrooms option. Follow the prompts to add your classes and students.

Teachers, Before You Begin

Make sure that:

  • You are listed as a teacher in the Google Classroom courses you want to import.

  • You sign in with the Google account connected to those courses.

  • Your students have already joined the correct Google Classroom courses.

  • Your school administrator has allowed Google Classroom rostering in Typing Agent.

  • Pop-ups are allowed temporarily if the Google sign-in window does not open.

Part 1: Open Google Classroom Sync

  1. Sign in to your Typing Agent teacher account.

  2. Select Classes from the left navigation menu.

  3. Select + Add Class in the upper-right corner.

  4. Choose Sync from Google Classroom.

The Sync from Google Classroom window opens.

The message in the window explains that you will connect your Google account so Typing Agent can bring in your Classroom courses and their rosters. You only need to complete the connection once unless it expires, is removed, or needs to be refreshed.

Part 2: Connect Your Google Account

Connecting for the First Time

  1. Select Connect Google Classroom.

  2. A Google sign-in window will open.

  3. Choose the Google account you use for Google Classroom.

  4. Review the requested permissions.

  5. Approve the connection so Typing Agent can view the courses and rosters you are authorized to manage.

  6. Return to Typing Agent after Google confirms the connection.

Typing Agent needs these permissions to display your available Google Classroom courses and import their student rosters.

Choose carefully: Teachers who have more than one Google account should select the school account used to create or manage their Google Classroom courses.

If You Have Already Connected

Select I’ve connected — refresh.

Use this option when:

  • You completed the Google sign-in process in another window.

  • You connected previously, but your courses are not displayed yet.

  • A recently created Google Classroom course is missing.

  • New students were added in Google Classroom and you need Typing Agent to check for updated information.

If the courses still do not appear, confirm that you connected the correct Google account and that you are an authorized teacher for those courses.

Part 3: Select the Courses to Import

After the connection refreshes, Typing Agent displays the Google Classroom courses available to your account.

  1. Review the list of courses.

  2. Select each course you want to create in Typing Agent.

  3. Leave courses unselected when they do not need Typing Agent access.

  4. Continue to the class setup screen.

Only import courses you intend to use. This helps prevent duplicate or unnecessary classes.

A course may not appear when it is archived in Google Classroom, belongs to another Google account, or you do not have the necessary teacher access.

Part 4: Review Each Class

Before creating the classes, review the information for each selected course.

Depending on your school permissions and the available setup options, you may be able to:

  • Change the class name.

  • Choose the main teacher.

  • Add additional teachers.

  • Select the class grade.

  • Choose the days the class meets.

The grade selection is especially important because Typing Agent uses grade information when assigning or recommending age-appropriate curriculum.

Use Clear Class Names

Google Classroom course names can be changed before import when that option is available. Choose names that teachers and administrators can recognize easily.

Examples include:

  • Grade 3 – Brown

  • Keyboarding – Period 2

  • Technology – Garcia

  • Grade 5 Homeroom

Part 5: Create the Classes and Add Students

  1. Confirm the class name, grade, and teacher information.

  2. Select the available Create, Import, or confirmation button.

  3. Allow Typing Agent time to process the selected courses.

  4. Return to the Classes page.

  5. Find the newly created class.

  6. Select the class row or its expand control.

  7. Open View Full Roster or select the Students area.

  8. Confirm that the expected students appear.

When the import is completed successfully, Typing Agent creates the class and imports the students enrolled in the selected Google Classroom course. Students can then use their connected Google credentials for sign-in where Google single sign-on is enabled.

Part 6: Check the Imported Roster

Compare the Typing Agent roster with the Google Classroom People list.

Check that:

  • The expected number of students appears.

  • Student names are correct.

  • The class has the correct grade.

  • The correct teacher is assigned.

  • No unexpected or duplicate class was created.

Select View Full Roster for a complete student list.

A student may be missing when the student:

  • Has not accepted the Google Classroom invitation.

  • Was added after the most recent import or refresh.

  • Joined using a different Google account.

  • Is not currently enrolled in the Google Classroom course.

  • Already has a Typing Agent account that needs to be matched or reviewed.

Adding New Students Later

Google Classroom should remain the main roster source for a Google-synced class.

  1. Add the student to the correct course in Google Classroom.

  2. Make sure the student accepts the course invitation.

  3. Return to Classes in Typing Agent.

  4. Select + Add Class.

  5. Choose Sync from Google Classroom.

  6. Select I’ve connected — refresh.

  7. Follow the available prompts to refresh or re-import the course.

  8. Open the Typing Agent class and check its roster.

Typing Agent’s current support guidance says that students in third-party rostered classes should generally be managed through the rostering source rather than entered separately in Typing Agent.

Avoid manually creating a second account for a student who is expected to come from Google Classroom. Doing so may result in duplicate student accounts.

Finding a Google Classroom Class

On the Classes page, use the tools above the class table.

Filter by Roster Source

  1. Open Roster Source.

  2. Select Google Classroom.

This limits the table to classes created through Google Classroom.

Search

Enter the class name or teacher’s name in the search box.

Filter by Status

Use Status to find classes that are:

  • On track

  • Needs attention

  • Not started

  • Archived

Managing a Google-Synced Class

Select a class row to open its class details. Depending on the class and your permissions, you may see:

  • Student roster

  • Assigned curriculum

  • Class assignments

  • Gradebook

  • Recent activity

  • Class reports

  • Class settings

You can manage Typing Agent learning settings, assignments, curriculum, and reports inside Typing Agent. Continue to manage Google-sourced course membership in Google Classroom.

Common Questions

I selected Connect Google Classroom, but nothing happened.

Check whether your browser blocked the Google sign-in window. Allow pop-ups for Typing Agent, then try again.

I connected Google, but no classes appear.

Select I’ve connected — refresh. Also confirm that:

  • You selected the correct Google account.

  • You are a teacher in the course.

  • The course is active.

  • The course contains students.

  • Your school allows Google Classroom rostering.

A student is missing.

Open Google Classroom and check that the student appears under People and has accepted the invitation. Then return to Typing Agent and refresh the Google Classroom connection.

A recently created course is missing.

Select I’ve connected — refresh. Google may also need a short amount of time to make a newly created course available to connected services.

I see the wrong Google account.

Close the connection window, sign out of the incorrect Google account if necessary, and reconnect using the school account that manages the courses.

I see duplicate classes.

Before importing, search the Typing Agent class list for the course name and filter by Google Classroom. Do not import a course again unless you are intentionally replacing or rebuilding it.

Should I manually add students to a Google Classroom class?

Generally, add students in Google Classroom and then refresh the connection. This keeps the Google Classroom roster as the consistent source of information and reduces duplicate accounts.

Removing a Student

For a Google Classroom-synced class:

  1. Remove or unenroll the student from the course in Google Classroom.

  2. Return to Typing Agent.

  3. Refresh the Google Classroom connection.

  4. Check the Typing Agent roster.

Do not permanently delete a Typing Agent student solely because the student is in your class. Use Delete only when the student leaves your school. Instead, unassign or disenroll the student. This preserves the student’s account and progress, while permanent deletion erases the student’s data and cannot be undone.

Helpful Tips

  • Finish building the Google Classroom roster before importing it.

  • Use the same school Google account every time you connect.

  • Select the correct grade before creating the class.

  • Check for an existing class before importing a course.

  • Add and remove students through Google Classroom whenever it is the roster source.

  • Review the Typing Agent roster after every import or major roster change.

  • Do not delete and recreate student accounts to fix ordinary enrollment problems.

  • Read confirmation messages before replacing, archiving, or rebuilding a class.
