Teachers, if you already have your classrooms made, we recommend adding students directly into their classrooms using the + Add Students button from when you click on a classroom. It's as easy as:
Click on Classes on the left panel.
Click directly on the class in which you want to add students.
Click the +Add Students button and follow the prompts.
Should you want to add them in other ways, here's how you do it.
What You Can Do from the Students Page
Using the + Add Students button, you can choose from four methods:
Add one student
Add many students
Upload CSV or Excel
Sync from Google Classroom
You can also:
Search for students by name, username, or email (We don't need email addresses but you may use them if you wish.)
Filter by Grade, Class, or Status
Use Columns to choose what appears in the table
Use Export to download student data
Before You Begin
Before adding students, it helps to have:
Student names
Usernames or email-style usernames
Temporary passwords, if needed
Grade levels
Class placements
A roster file, if importing in bulk
A connected Google account, if using Google Classroom
Helpful tip: If your school already uses Google Classroom, Clever, or ClassLink, check with your administrator before manually creating student accounts. This helps avoid duplicate students.
Step 1: Open the Students Page
Sign in to Typing Agent.
In the left menu, select Students.
Review the student dashboard at the top of the page. You may see:
Total Students
Active This Week
Inactive
Not Started
This page gives you a quick picture of student participation.
Step 2: Select Add Students
In the upper-right corner, select + Add Students.
Choose the method that best matches how you want to build your roster.
You will see these four options:
Add one student — good for a single new student
Add many students — good for quickly pasting several students
Upload CSV or Excel — good for a large roster file
Sync from Google Classroom — good for importing students from Classroom courses
Option 1: Add One Student
Use this method when you need to create one student account manually.
Steps
Select Add one student.
Enter the student’s information. This usually includes:
First name
Last name
Username
Password
Grade
If prompted, assign the student to a class.
Review the information carefully.
Select the save or create button to finish.
Best for
New students who joined after the class was created
Small roster changes
Quick individual account creation
Teacher tip: Use a clear naming pattern for usernames so they are easy for students to remember.
Option 2: Add Many Students
Use this option when you want to enter several students at once without creating a spreadsheet file.
Steps
Select Add many students.
Paste the student list into the entry area.
Follow the on-screen formatting directions.
Add any required information such as:
Grade
Class
Password pattern
Review the list for spelling mistakes or duplicates.
Select the create or save button.
Best for
A small or medium group of students
Quick roster setup without a file import
Teachers who already have a student list copied from another source
Teacher tip: Double-check student names before saving. It is much easier to correct mistakes before accounts are created.
Option 3: Upload a CSV or Excel File
Use this method when you already have a roster in a spreadsheet.
Steps
Select Upload CSV or Excel.
Prepare your roster file in Excel or CSV format.
Include the needed student information, such as:
First name
Last name
Username
Password
Grade
Class, if required
Upload the file.
Match or confirm the column headings if Typing Agent asks you to map them.
Review the preview before importing.
Fix any flagged problems, such as:
Missing information
Duplicate usernames
Incorrect formatting
Confirm the import.
Best for
Full class rosters
Schoolwide uploads
Beginning-of-year setup
Teacher tip: Keep one clean master spreadsheet for student imports. This makes updates much easier later.
Option 4: Sync from Google Classroom
Use this option when your students are already enrolled in Google Classroom.
Typing Agent’s internal onboarding resources specifically point users to How to Roster your students with Google Classroom and How to Roster Students into Typing Agent using Google Classroom, confirming that Google Classroom is a supported rostering method.
Steps
Select Sync from Google Classroom.
If needed, connect your Google account.
Sign in with the Google account that manages your Classroom courses.
Approve the connection.
Refresh the connection if prompted.
Select the Google Classroom course or courses you want to import.
Review the class and student information.
Confirm the import.
Best for
Teachers already using Google Classroom
Faster class and roster setup
Keeping course membership consistent with Google Classroom
Important: If a class is coming from Google Classroom, it is usually best to add and remove students in Google Classroom first, then refresh the connection in Typing Agent.
Step 3: Check That Students Were Added Correctly
After adding students, return to the Students page and review the roster.
Look for:
Student name
Grade
Class
Last activity
Status
If needed, select a student row or use the expand arrow to view more details.
Find a Student
The filters and search tools at the top of the page help you quickly locate students.
Filter by Grade
Use the Grade dropdown to show only students in a certain grade.
Filter by Class
Use the Class dropdown to show only students from a specific class.
Filter by Status
Use the Status dropdown to find students who are:
Active
Inactive
Not Started
or other available status groups
Search
Use the search box to find a student by:
Name
Username
Email
Teacher tip: Search is especially helpful when checking whether a student account already exists before creating a new one.
Open and Review a Student Record
Once students are added, you can review their information from the student list.
You may be able to see or access:
Student details
Assigned class
Grade level
Login activity
Status
Additional actions through the menu at the far right
This helps you confirm that each student is placed correctly.
Avoid Duplicate Students
Before adding students, check whether they already exist in Typing Agent.
To prevent duplicates:
Search for the student first
Use the same rostering method consistently
Avoid manually creating an account for a student who should come from Google Classroom
Review imports before confirming them
Best practice: If your school uses a connected rostering source, keep that source as the main place where roster changes are made.
Helpful Setup Tips
Create classes before adding students manually, when possible.
Keep username formats consistent across your class or school.
Use simple temporary passwords if students are logging in manually.
Review imported data before finalizing.
Add students in batches when possible to save time.
Use filters to check each class after importing a roster.
If a student is missing after a sync, check the rostering source first.
Common Questions
Which option should I use?
Add one student: one student only
Add many students: several students pasted into a list
Upload CSV or Excel: spreadsheet import
Sync from Google Classroom: students already exist in Classroom
What if I do not see the student after adding them?
Try these steps:
Use the search box.
Check the correct Class filter.
Check the Grade filter.
Check whether the student was added under a different username.
If using Google Classroom, refresh the sync.
What if I accidentally create a duplicate?
Pause before creating more students. Search for the student account first, then decide whether the existing account should be used instead of creating another one.
