Adding Students

How to add students via CSV, one by one, in a block, or via self-registration.

Written by Niki Frisby

District Administrator

As a District Administrator, you are responsible for loading your schools, classrooms, staff, and students into Typing Agent. The most efficient and error-proof way to get your district’s data set up is to load them in this order:  schools, teachers, classrooms, then students.

Note: If your district is rostering with Classlink or Clever, you will be adding your students there rather than here in Typing Agent.

Students can be added in the following ways:

  • In bulk with a CSV file (which can be automated using our SFTP nightly upload process - please contact us at support@typingagent.com if you would like to set this up)

  • Through a third-party rostering system. Typing Agent uses Google Classroom, ClassLink, or Clever (in which you will be rostering your students through there and not adding them in Typing Agent)

  • By a single student upload

  • By student self-registration (in which students create their own usernames and passwords as they enroll into your classroom).

CSV

NOTE: CSV files needs to be saved as a UTF-8 encoded file.

There are two methods of uploading your students via a CSV. While all will result in the same outcome of your students being uploaded, sample CSV templates and details on the exact data required can be found wherever you find the opportunity to upload the students.

Note: the program accepts letters and numbers, and the special characters _(underscore), -(dash), and @(at).

Method 1:

You can upload your students via CSV by navigating to Upload Your Students from your Dashboard.

From here, you will be directed to upload your CSV file.

Method 2:

You can upload your students via CSV by navigating to User Management from your Dashboard.

From here, select the green + Students & Staff button.

Now, select Import Students

From here, you will be directed to upload your CSV file.

Google Classroom

Although you will need a school administrator or teacher account, not your district administrator credentials, to import students into Typing Agent, you can still upload classrooms of students using Google Classroom. Our program will not appear as an app on their platform. Once you upload your classrooms to Typing Agent, students will be able to use their Google credentials for SSO purposes. Here's our guide that walks you through syncing your classrooms and students into Typing Agent with Google Classroom.

Adding A Single Student

You can add your students one at a time directly into Typing Agent if you have a single or very small student number to upload. Note that they will not be assigned to a class, but to a school as per your enrollment. (To find these students, you can navigate to User Management, then click the filter button to filter for Unassigned Students.)

First, navigate to User Management from your Dashboard.

Then, select the green + Students & Staff button.

Now, select Add a Student.

Now, you can fill out the webform to add a single student into a school in Typing Agent.

Adding Students with Class Code (Student Self-Registration)

There are two steps required to enable student self-registration with a class code.

First, you will need to enable a self-registration link on your accounts unique login page.

To do this, navigate to School Management from your Dashboard.

From here, select School Portal.

Scroll all the way down until you see a checkbox under Sign up Options - select Allow Student Sign up.

Now, yourself or a teacher can navigate to a class.

(Note: The following screenshots are a guide for a teacher or school administrator to add students via this class code that you have enabled - in order to perform the following steps, you will need to log in as a teacher or school administrator.)

From here, select the green +Students button.

Now, select Add Students With Class Code.

From here, you will see that Class Code is by default, disabled. All you need to do is press Enable.

You can edit this class code or leave it as is - but this code is what students will sign in with.

When your students navigate to your school's Typing Agent page, they will see an option for Student Self-Registration.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE GOING TO https://yourdomain.typingagent.com . You will NOT see the self-registration options if you are going to https://app.typingagent.com and manually entering in your domain.

This is where they will register, enter this code, and enroll into your class.

Standalone Single School Administrator

As a standalone single school administrator, you are responsible for loading your classrooms, staff, and students into Typing Agent. The most efficient and error-proof way to get your school's data set up is to load them in this order: staff, classrooms, then students.

(Note: If your school is rostering with Classlink or Clever, you will be adding your students there rather than here in Typing Agent.)

Students can be added in the following ways:

  • In bulk with a CSV file (which can be automated using our SFTP nightly upload process - please contact us at support@typingagent.com if you would like to set this up)

  • Through a third-party rostering system such as Google Classroom, ClassLink, or Clever (this will be where you are rostering your students, not adding them in Typing Agent)

  • By block student upload

  • By a single student upload

  • By student self-registration (in which students create their own usernames and passwords as they enroll into your classroom)

CSV Upload

(Note: In order to format correctly, CSV files need to be saved as a UTF-8 encoded file.)

There are three methods of uploading your students via a CSV. While all will result in the same outcome of your students being uploaded, sample CSV templates and details on the exact data required can be found wherever you find the opportunity to upload the students.

Note: the program accepts letters and numbers, and the special characters _(underscore), -(dash), and @(at).

Method 1:

You can upload your students via CSV by navigating to Upload from your Dashboard.

From here, you will be directed to upload your CSV file.

Method 2:

You can upload your students via CSV by navigating to User Management from your Dashboard.

From here, select the green + Students & Staff button.

Now, select Import Students.

From here, you will be directed to upload your CSV file.

Method 3:

You can upload your students via CSV by classroom only by navigating to a class from your Dashboard.

From here, select the + Students button.

Now, select Import Students.

From here, you will be directed to upload your CSV file.

Single Student Upload

You can add your students one at a time to either your classroom directly, or into Typing Agent if you have not decided which class they need to be in. If this is the case, they will be found in your Unassigned students category until you enroll them into a class.

(To find these students, you can navigate to User Management, then click the filter button to filter for Unassigned Students.)

Directly Into Classroom

First, navigate to your Class.

Then, select the + Students button.

From here, select Add Single Student.

Now, you can fill out the parameters to add a Single Student into the class.

First, navigate to User Management from your Dashboard.

Then, select the green + Students & Staff button.

Now, select Add a Student.

Now, you can fill out the webform to add a single student into Typing Agent.

Block Student Upload

You can add multiple students at once directly into a class by uploading them in bulk.

Please note: creating a block of students will give them all the same username and password and once assigned, will append a unique number to the end of each username. You can allow them to update their First Name and Last Name and/or Password upon their first log-in. This method is convenient for creating multiple accounts at once without needing to be too specific on student details.

First, navigate to your Class.

Then, select the + Students button.

From here, select Add a Block of Students.

Now, you can fill out the parameters to add a block of students to your class.

Student Self Registration (Class Code Required)

There are two steps required to enable student self-registration with a class code.

First, you will need to enable a self-registration link on your accounts unique login page. IMPORTANT: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE GOING TO https://yourdomain.typingagent.com . You will NOT see the self-registration options if you are going to https://app.typingagent.com and manually entering in your domain.

To do this, navigate to your Admin button, then to School Management.

From here, select School Portal.

Scroll all the way down until you see a checkbox under Sign up Options - select Allow Student Sign up.

Now, navigate to your class.

This is where they will register, enter this code, and enroll into your class.

School Administrator or Teacher

If you are a teacher or a school administrator, you can add students directly within your class. This makes it easier to create a class, then add in new students, or simply add a single student if someone new has joined.

Note: If your district is rostering with Classlink or Clever, you will be adding your students there rather than here in Typing Agent.

Add Students with Google Classroom

If your school uses Google Classroom, it is easy to get your students uploaded. Once the School Administrator has enabled you to use this method from the School portal, it's a few simple steps and your classrooms and students are created. Click here for instructions and video.

Add students individually, CSV upload files, or self registration

Should you want to add students using any of these other methods, click on a classroom on the left. You land on the Students tab.

Then, select the green +Students button.

Now, you will see a menu containing the different ways to add your student/students.

Add a Single Student

When you select Add A Single Student, you will fill out a webform and then select Create to create the account.

Add a Block of Students

When you select Add a Block of Students, you will fill out a webform where you are required to give give just one username and password on a form that looks like this. This method is convenient for creating multiple accounts at once without needing to be too specific on student details.

After this form is completed and saved, based on the username you've used and number of students you stated, the program will append a unique numeral at the end of each username (because each student needs a unique username!) The password doesn't change because that doesn't have to be unique. Here's an example:

We suggest that you permit students to update their First Name and Last Name and/or Password upon their first log-in, so it's totally unique to that student. A suggestion is to give students the unique username generated by the program and the password. (i.e., we give Johnny the account associated with teststudent1 and password Qwerty, as per the screenshot above.) Then, they'll put that information in the appropriate areas when the log in at your school's secure Typing Agent page, the same web address that you use to enter the program.

Once putting in their generic username and password, another form will pop up where they put in their first and last names and a new password then save that. (Teachers and admins may view whatever changes students have done when they click on a classroom, then its students. They can edit these should they see fit.)

Add Students with Class Code (Student Self-Registration)

There are a few quick steps required to enable student self-registration with a class code.

The school administrator needs to log into their account. Click the Admin button then the School Management option.

Now click on the School Portal button at the far right:

Scroll down to the bottom and select the checkbox next to Allow Student Sign up option.

Don't forget to press SAVE at the bottom of the page to activate your selections. In so doing, students at your school may now self register to add themselves into a classroom. Teachers will now need to activate their class codes.

Using the list of classrooms on the left, teachers click on the classroom that they want students to self register. In the green banner that has the classroom's name, you'll see our default setting Class code: Disabled. Click the checkbox next to it and a pop-up screen appears with Disabled on it. Click the Enable option at the bottom left.

Automatically, a code will appear in a big blue box. (Notice that you can disable it from here also.) Here's what was generated for one of my classrooms:

The unique code you get will be what students in this class use to register to get into that particular classroom. Please give this code to them! You don't have to worry: see the code will now be on the green banner under your classroom's name replacing the word Disabled.

When your students go to your school's Typing Agent page, they will see an option for Student Self-Registration. They click that button.

If they do this properly, they will now appear in your classroom when you click on it. Please review what they did as sometimes students get quite creative in their choice of usernames and passwords.

Import Students

When you select Import Your Students, you will be doing this via a CSV file upload. CSV templates and instructions on the exact data required can be found by within the program by selecting Download Example .CSV file.

When you'd like to upload your own CSV, select Upload.CSV .

(Note: the program accepts alphanumeric numbers, and the special characters _(underscore), -(dash), and @(at).)
