Because Typing Agent is a program tailored to each students’ individual needs, you may find it helpful to edit a student’s (or group of students’) Target Settings. As a District Administrator, you are able to set the target settings for all students in your district based on the grade level they are in.

What are Target Settings?

Target settings are Accuracy and Words Per Minute (WPM) requirements each student must meet to pass a lesson. Typing Agent has applied appropriate grade-level default target settings for each grade level but you may change them to match anything that your district deems appropriate for your students. Additionally, our default settings permit teachers the ability to override these settings. Because they work directly with students, if a student is having difficulty or finds the program too easy, teachers may go in and make adjustments immediately without disturbing you or other administrators. It is important that teachers understand that these should not be touched unless warranted.

What are the default Target Settings?

Typing Agent's requires that students must earn at least two (2) stars to advance to the next lesson (Standard Proficiency) and there are No Max Retries per lesson. We present two characters at a time for them to learn so we want students to meet grade level expectations before they can move on and in so doing, we are building a strong foundation on which students will begin to learn new keystrokes. This means that they won't have to be preoccupied with finding the old keys when they're learning new ones.

Each grade level has its own 1-star (below), 2-star (meets), and 3-star (exceeds) settings. The last exercise in the keyboarding curriculum is the Final Evaluation. When students get to that Final Evaluation, the program's algorithm uses 2-star target setting to determine whether they pass or fail. With that knowledge, should you change anything, make sure that your 2-star settings are the WPM and accuracy targets you want your students to achieve when typing.

How do I adjust these target settings for a grade level?

First, go to School Management from your Dashboard.

Then, select the Target Settings tab.

Select the grade level whose target settings you'd like to adjust.

Now, you have the option to set which WPM and Accuracy combinations denote 3 stars achieved, 2 stars achieved, and 1 star achieved. If you want to change our default settings, you must specifically click on the number above the ___ to adjust those numbers to whatever WPM and accuracy you'd like. (Remember, the Final Evaluation results are based on the 2-star setting so if you make adjustments and set it so that your students may move on after attaining only 1 star, they may not be prepared to take that final exam when they get to the end of their keyboarding lessons for their grade level.

Scrolling down, you can also adjust the proficiency requirements, meaning that you can adjust how many times a student can attempt a lesson before being allowed to move on without passing. Again, we suggest that you leave it at the 2-star minimum but you may change it to what make sense for your students.

When you're finished, hit Save to apply these settings.

How can I let teachers control their classroom's targets? How can I prevent them from it?

Because we understand that Typing Agent is an adaptive program, you can set your staff permissions so that teachers and school administrators can or cannot adjust these settings. For more information on how to control who can do what, please click here.
